FORT WORTH — Houston coach Kelvin Sampson is coaching with a heavy heart at this weekend’s American Athletic Conference tournament.
Sampson’s twin sister, Karen, died Friday morning, just a few hours before the top-ranked Cougars opened the AAC tournament with a 60-46 win over East Carolina.
After the Cougars beat Cincinnati 69-48 on Saturday to advance to a fifth straight AAC championship game, Sampson, 67, said “Friday was a difficult day” and that he had been dealing with a personal issue. Shortly after the postgame press conference the school announced that Sampson’s sister had died.
The school said it was unaware of funeral arrangements.
